Where should Change really begin?

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything” said George Bernard Shaw.

Good Curriculum is the key ingredient for globally competitive individuals, however changing the Landscape of Higher Education doesn’t happen overnight. It involves complex procedures that will consume great space of time.

There are a lot of factors floating around that influence High Inquisitors of Education of changing the Curriculum. Growing Number of Drop-outs, Teenage Pregnancy, under and Unemployment, and Poverty, these are just some of the various reasons why we change our Curriculum. Curiosity is driving the High Inquisitors mad why Drop outs increases as time passes; why a lot of teenagers gets on the state of early pregnancy; and why lots of College Graduates end up as “Tambay”. Having all these problems in the country with 93.4% of Literacy Rate is truly alarming.

Philippines has 10-year basic Education which is composed of 6 years Education in Elementary and 4 year Education on High School however, due to the persistent Government, the K-12 Curriculum is introduced replacing the 10-year basic Education Curriculum into 12-year basic Education. In this new Curriculum, Humanities, Social Sciences, Literature and Foreign Languages that are obviously under the boundaries of Tertiary Education is introduced, which brings back the chaos on Changing the College Curriculum. Due to this new 12-year Basic Education, CHED have thought of changing the College Curriculum as well.

The CHED had revised the GEC or General Education Curriculum in College that will take effect on 2018 when all of the High School Graduates had already undergone in K-12 Program, slashing the subjects that have migrated in the High School Phase of Basic Education.

The Government is indeed desperate to develop the Youth as early as today to produce Globally Competitive individuals tomorrow. However, just like what George Bernard Shaw has said, “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything”. People say that whatever change you do in the Scope of Education, if the Government won’t change itself and continue being corrupt and selfish, just like leaving your house messy, when you get back nothing has changed; nothing had happened because you did nothing. On these People’s point of view, it’s clear that the sole root of problem lies within the Government.

However, there is an individual who wouldn’t want to mention his name said that “Changing the world means changing the world within your world”. Reading between his lines, this person would like to emphasise in one self’s metamorphosis. In other words, changing one’s way of living, attitudes and moral aspect is the first step to change big things. Because, how could you possibly carryout big changes if you couldn’t even divert small anomalies within yourself?

Change must always begin within thy self because there’s really nothing wrong with our Educational System. The problem lies within us. Our Lack of Discipline is our greatest fatal flaw. This Problem of ours isn’t as big as Galaxy nor isn’t as deep as the Mariana Trench. Actually, it is more like Mathematics; it is very simple however we make it complicated and find it impossible to solve.
